Holbox Tourist Guide: Everything you need to know
Holbox is a small and quiet island within the municipality of Lazaro Cardenas in the state of Quintana Roo. Holbox is a refuge for more than 100 species of birds, 311 species of wildlife, 49% of amphibians and reptiles of the Yucatan Peninsula and 79% of Quintana Roo. Here live species such as:

Bioluminescence
Holbox is also home to a unique phenomenon known as bioluminescence or ardentía. Its waters experience this phenomenon all year round but from March to November it is more prevalent due to the warm water temperature. Bioluminescence is caused by microorganisms present in the water that emit light when disturbed.
It is recommended to enjoy this phenomenon at Punta Cocos beach. From the beach it is visible but the further you go into the sea, the more this phenomenon is visible.
Vacation sports

How to get there?
Holbox is reached by ferry from Chiquilá, which takes about 15 minutes to reach the island. There are departures every half hour. You can take a bus from Cancun or Merida or directly from Cancun airport.

Holbox is a great year-round destination. The best time to visit Holbox is during the dry season, between October and June. July and August tend to be busier due to summer vacations.
