The new Tulum Airport is almost ready to start receiving tourists. And with that, announcements have begun about the new routes that will fly to one of the most important tourist destinations in the region. Aeromexico and Viva Aerobus become the first airlines to offer these flights.
Routes for the New Tulum Airport Announced
The new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum will begin to receive tourists on December 1st of this year. In the third week of August of this year, Aeromexico and Viva Aerobus airlines announced new routes to the New Tulum Airport.
Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva Aerobus, shared that the routes will be direct flights and will have new aircraft. On the other hand, the airline will maintain its value proposition by offering lower prices. Aeromexico will begin operations from Mexico City’s International Airport to the New Tulum Airport in early December.

Aeromexico will make flights to Tulum available to domestic and international tourists from:
- Aguascalientes
- Chicago
- Guadalajara
- San Francisco
- Tijuana
- Toronto

On December 1st, Viva Aerobus will begin service to Mexico City International Airport (AICM), Felipe Angeles Airport and Monterrey. It is scheduled to begin service to Guadalajara on December 16 and to Tijuana on December 17.
Viva Aerobus routes will offer a daily flight from AICM and Monterrey as well as AIFA. On average, the airline will offer 221,000 seats per month. From Guadalajara there will be three flights per week and Tijuana one flight per week for the low season and three flights per week for the high season.
Starting the third week of August 2023, users and tourists will be able to purchase tickets for the new routes.
It is important to highlight that Viva Aerobus is the only airline that will operate in December from the 4 international airports of Quintana Roo (Cancun, Chetumal, Cozumel and Tulum).
Progress of the New Tulum Airport
At the end of August 2023, the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) reported that the construction of the new Tulum Airport is 50% complete. This project was announced in 2021 and will have connections to the Mayan Train.
Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo International Airport will have an initial capacity of 5.5 million users per year. This new structure that will attract tourism is located in a privileged position, only 15 kilometers west of the Magic Town. Among its features will be:
- Commercial and service corridor: Connection to Federal Highway 307.
- 13 positions for domestic and international commercial aircraft
- Hangar with 12 additional seats for business jets
With the new routes recently announced, Tulum is closer to becoming one of the most visited destinations in the Riviera Maya.
